  • Nika Belianina was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. After completing her Masters in Psychology, she came to Canada in 2003 to visit her parents. They had immigrated here a few years earlier. One week before she was about to return home, all her documents were stolen from her and she had to stay.

That one February night of 2004 changed her whole life. Instead of practicing the science of curing human souls, she dove into the world of illusion and manufactured realities - the film industry. Her passion for photography turned her into a lighting technician, her passion for telling stories – into a director of short films.

Winner of three awards, her films are odd and quirky, varying in theme from hypno-cats and brain-washed society to multiple-personality disorders, from ugly dolls looking for love to the immigrant tale of an old lady. Her photographs reflect her view of life and its mysteries as well. Through her work she hopes to convey the hidden magic of our surroundings and to evoke the thirst to dream and question. She is constantly looking for new ways of expression. Amongst them are stop-motion animation, sunlight sensitive paper, underwater and pinhole photography.
